LOCMASTER – Story

It all began with the idea of developing a more efficient excavator bucket for the quarrying and mining industry that would achieve the performance of the next largest excavator class. In order to achieve a noticeably larger capacity, the basic structure of a classic backhoe would no longer be sufficient. The idea of a skeleton structure for the backhoe body was born. The new base assembly in conjunction with the skeleton design now consists of 8 segments and is no longer made from a single bent part. The cutting edge with its special shape and tooth arrangement is also part of the overall concept. This creates the so-called slipstream effect for the bucket body behind it. This allows the heavy wear protection on the backhoe body to be reduced to a minimum. Completely new approaches were also taken in the material grades used for the bucket construction. Our expertise with the the special construction of underground equipment was used.

LOCMASTER

In April 2022 we started testing the first prototype for the 90 t excavator class. To put the LOCMASTER through its paces, we went straight into the wear-intensive hard rock and tested it together with our long-standing customer Hartsteinwerk Loja in Austria. After the 2022 season, the LOCMASTER was adapted and optimised during the winter break in line with the results of the test deployment. Following the positive start with the revised LOCMASTER, Hartsteinwerk Loja decided to purchase a second LOCMASTER in mid-2023, now for the 70 t excavator class. Hartsteinwerk Loja now operates 3 LOCMASTER mining buckets.

In a series of demonstrations with a 70t-class LOCMASTER – in close co-operation with the Kiesel company – we were able to gather more detailed facts, figures and data. Our expectations were more than fulfilled. The loading cycles of the excavator were always reduced by 35 – 40% compared to the existing buckets. And this with almost identical fuel consumption! The drop ball application was also tested. Based on this, we developed the ‘drop ball option’.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our employees for their hard work and perseverance and, in particular, Hartsteinwerk Loja and Kiesel for the trust they have placed in us and the great cooperation!

LOCMASTER HD

In 2024, we received a new enquiry from a long-standing customer – for whom we have already manufactured HD ripper buckets in the 200 t excavator class – again for a 200 t machine. The task here was not to maximise the capacity, but to counteract the extreme stress and extreme wear in the extraction of high-density kaolin. As the 3D floor assembly of the classic LOCMASTER achieved such positive results, particularly in terms of wear, we realised that these advantages would also be of great benefit to AKW ((Amberger Kaolinwerke Eduard Kick GmbH & Co. KG).

No sooner said than done: we now developed the heavy duty – HD series as a supplement. The focus here is not on maximum capacity, but on the LOCMASTER’s tear and wear resistance. Regardless of this, the capacity of the LOCMASTER’s HD can be increased by 15% compared to its predecessor and a weight saving of 3.5 tonnes can be achieved!

In the future, the HD version of the LOCMASTER will be used by customers who are confronted with very coarse chipping in quarries and extraction processes.
